Naughty or Nice?

With Christmas almost here, my thoughts have turned to the strangers who have been most helpful to me, this year. Or not.

It's only a bit of fun, but I do advise you to make your own list, as not only does it allow you to vent your angst over something, but it allows the wider picture to be seen, whether you reach a balance or whether you've had a year full of annoying, petty, problems.

NAUGHTY                                                      NICE                        

The man who shouted abuse at me,         All the fellow dog- walkers who stopped  

because I pressed the button                    to chat with me. 

for the lights to change. 

The woman who complained about       Glasgow Council, who helped me 

me placing things outside of my            dispose of my dad's old furniture, 

dad's flat for the council to pick up.       after he passed away. 

(The furniture was next to the bins as

I'd been told to do.)

                                                                                    

The sales assistant at Charford Post       The OTHER sales assistant, who just did it 

Office, who sent me away with my           the next day, when I returned, 

heavy parcel unposted, as                       refusing all help from me.

'she wasn't allowed' to  lift it, 

( fair enough) but insisted that I

couldn't place it where all the other

large parcels waited to be collected

by the Parcelforce driver, as only she

could do that!

Beko manufacturers and AO for           Argos for replacing my broken vacuum  

making and selling me a dishwasher     cleaner, without the slightest quibble.

that broke the DAY AFTER the 12

month warranty ran out.

I could go on, but I won't, as I think you get my point.

Life is made up of the things that happen to us and how others help us through those times.

Going forward, I'm going to do my damnedest to be on other people's 'nice' side.

I hate to say I told you so, but I told you so!

I got a brief text message from a friend the other day:

Hi. Did you just phone me? Sorry. I was too engrossed with reading your book. It's really hard to put down!

I laughed and laughed. This is from a woman who resisted my attempts to get her to read Split Decision for over a year. And I totally understand why. She's my friend and was worried about what she would say, how she would face me if the book was no good. But I knew something she didn't, I knew that she'd love it.

That's the problem with friendship. A few years ago another friend actually confessed to me that she'd bought my first book because she'd felt she had to. But when she began to read it, she was fully captivated by the story, so much so, that she took to hiding herself away, so that she could continue without interruption. The look on her face as she told me how riveting the story was, was priceless.

You see, as many people have remarked, you wouldn't know by talking to me that I am capable of writing these books. Whilst this could be taken as an insult, I have to admit that it's true. The words and ideas which flow so easily onto the screen when I'm writing a novel, are almost incompatible with the everyday me, the one who is obsessed with how much she weighs and whether everyone has eaten their food and is basically a dimwit when it comes to current affairs.

So to any of you who know me and still haven't bought one of my books, I have only this to say: When you do eventually buy one, and you finally read it, try not to say what everyone else says. Try not to exclaim, "I can't believe you actually wrote this! I loved every minute of it!"

Because my reply will always be, "I hate to say I told you so, but I told you so!"

NEWS!

One of my very first reviews ever, was from a gentleman in Hawaii who raved about The Owners, Volume I, and insisted it should be compulsory reading in schools.
 
I have never forgotten those kind words, and will be eternally grateful, Richard Sommery-Gade. So today I am posting here to say that your comments were perhaps far-seeing.
 
Yesterday, I discovered that my books were being considered for schools not only in England, but in Egypt! So keep your fingers crossed for me folks and I'll let you know what happens.
