I'm in a house cleaning and selling loop, so...

It is not often I repost something but in the run up to preparing my house for sale, I thought about this once more, so here it is... [originally posted 2013]

There are rooms in my house that are as foreign to me as another country. I enter them occasionally and am immediately transfixed by the sheer volume of rubbish in them.

It is then that I am driven to wonder where all the contents that are strewn across the bed, the floor and even the window sills, have come from. Because as sure as night follows day, I didn’t put them there.

But before you jump to conclusions, let me explain. I have three children. Now logically you may think three children = three children’s bedrooms [messy perhaps but containable]. Believe me the reality is far, far different.

Like large messy magpies, my children seem to adore collecting the obscure and [in my opinion] needless junk that masquerades as interesting souvenirs. Bits of ripped paper, used train tickets and a fragment of a box that once contained a watch, are prime examples of this.

I know this because I have spent the last two hours wading through all this paraphernalia, trying to make sense of it all. But in the midst of all the dusting and removing of grime, a memory surfaced.

Once there was a little metal tin. Inside the little metal tin was a little metal hairslide, a little metal brooch and some other odds and ends. I know this because the little metal tin and its contents belonged to the eight year-old me.

And I treasured that tin. Not because the contents belonged to me but because they had once belonged to someone who had been very important to my father. They had belonged to his mother.

My father had a very difficult childhood, fraught with family secrets and skeletons in the cupboard but he had loved his mother, who had died relatively young. And he had kept this little box for many years, only passing it on to me, his step-daughter, when he realised that I too was the sort of person who would understand why he kept the box.

Now if you were to ask him why he had kept it, I guess he would say that it was a memento. And it was.

But it was also so much more than that. It was a gateway into the memories of his childhood, the smell of his mother’s hair and the feel of her lips on his cheek as she kissed him goodnight. It was the sound of her voice and the taste of cool lemonade on a hot summer’s day.

It was all the things he would want to remember of his childhood and some of the things he would not but which came as a package nonetheless.

And the tin still exists. It no longer takes pride of place in my bedroom but it has not been forgotten. It has become by the importance vested in it, not only a part of my father’s life and childhood, but my own too.

In these days of throwaway items, tvs that are cheaper to re-purchase than to repair and washing machines that seem to be designed to break down as soon as the warranty expires, I wonder what we will leave as mementos for future generations.

Our houses are filled with expensive rubbish made of plastic and chipboard. We now live in a throwaway society and it is this very mindset which is becoming entrenched not only in our decorating choices but in our moral standards and values too.

So, if like me, you are spring cleaning a little over this Easter period, be careful what you throw away…because you might just throw away something worthless which is absolutely priceless…

Happy Reading!

FILM FREEWAY - Pay attention

Hello all you filmmakers, directors, producers and writers out there. Listen up, because this is for YOU.

You might already know that I run several film festivals; Stratford on Avon Film FestivalBirmingham Horror Film Festival and Convention, and Envisage International Film Festival - and if you didn't, well now you do.

The vast majority of films we receive as submissions are great, BUT and it's in capitals for a reason - there are many that come into each of the festivals  under the wrong category. Now we are fair and honest people, so when that happens (and because we have the luxury of running three different festivals) we try to contact the filmmaker, offer a free code to transfer their film to the correct festival and out of the one they have incorrectly sent it to. But this is time consuming for both parties and may mean that a film misses a deadline for submission.

So this is a plea to all filmmakers out there. CHECK the criteria for the festival you intend to submit to. I can't tell you how many family dramas Envisage gets, even though it is clearly marked as a sci-fi and fantasy film festival. And if you don't, and the festival will not transfer the film (unlike us) the reality is that you are likely wasting your money.  So beware!

Thanks!

A nice surprise!

It's always so lovely to find a new review on Amazon.

Most of my books only have a few reviews but every single one of them is genuine and not a paid-for service.

So check out Invisible now.

Get ready for it...

I'm reposting a post from a few years ago because I have just finished editing this book, ready for release.

The Owners Volume 5 - coming soon.

I have got to stop crying!

I have just written chapter seventeen, where one of my most beloved characters dies and I am heart broken. I didn't want him to die and I even tried to resuscitate him but his death was central to the plot and unavoidable.

And so I am grieving.

Unfortunately  this is not the only time in the past week I have cried. I watched the film District 9 the other night and it had me in floods of tears as well!

So now I have to add that to the list of film I can't watch without having a blubber. Here are my top ten...and in no particular order.

1. King Kong - I LOVE that hairy beast!
2. Truly, madly, deeply - the actors are so real and it gets me every time,
3. Dirty Dancing - I figure that's a kind of odd one here, but I cry!
4. District 9 - obviously!
5. Ghost - there's a definite Patrick Swayze theme here [ahem!]
6. The Lion King - yes I do know it's animation but when the daddy lion holds the cub up....
7. The notebook - oh my God I cried from start to end
8. I am legend - just because he is so alone [and the dog dies]
9. Schindler's list - they almost had to remove me from the cinema
 and finally,
10. Up - another animation which my children did not entirely understand in all its subtleties but I did.

There are of course many, many others, some of which have yet to be written.

But the hardest of all are the ones you write for yourself...

Have a great weekend and do something fun. I sure hope to.

Not to be outdone, Birmingham Horror Film Festival now boasts a horror convention alongside the film festival and has even more news to come.
There is still time to submit films to both festivals and for traders to book the last few remaining tables - but be quick!

Hear me talk about my books and other projects.

This Sunday at midday you can hear me talk about my most recent books, films and other projects on the Listen with Lee show on Black Country Radio.

Thanks to Lee Benson for being an amazing interviewer and for inviting me onto his show.

Dreaming Big

Several years ago I bought a house which was in a really bad state of repair. I knew it would be a tonne of work. But I had no idea of the nightmares that would arise in what appeared to be an idyllic spot.

Follow the journey with me in posts coming soon.

Happy World Book Day!

I had intended to publish another book, Volume 4 of this series in fact, for World Book Day - in other words, today.

But if you've scrolled through these blog posts, you'll have seen how busy I've been. And the truth is that what you are seeing here, is only a fraction of the projects I have underway.

So hold onto your hats as there's more to come. And I promise Volumes 4 and 5 of this series will be out soon.

WE HAVE LAUNCHED!!

For the past two years I have had to keep something under wraps as we filmed episodes and prepared for the big reveal.

Yesterday we went live.

AutoAngels means so much to me. The ethos of helping people and giving back to the community is at the heart of nearly everything I do. But it's not just about fixing cars for people, it's about encouraging people to enter the world of mechanics and STEM in general.

So please take a look, subscribe and share - because we all need some angels in our lives.

Sci-fi, Horror and Film Memorabilia Traders Wanted

Thanks to Solihull College and University Centre

A couple of days ago I did a talk at Solihull College and University Centre to a group of young filmmakers. Talking with them, their grasp of the industry was clear as was their enthusiasm, and I believe that their futures are bright.

But there is no denying that this is a tough industry to crack. That's why our team at  Envisage International Film FestivalBirmingham Horror Film Festival and Stratford-upon-Avon Film Festival are so keen to promote student films and indie filmmakers.

Keep your eyes peeled for our big news coming soon.

College and school talks

In the coming months I will be popping up here, there and everywhere, as I give talks at a number of schools and colleges about writing, publishing books, writing for film and TV, and running film festivals. I'm absolutely thrilled to be encouraging and ushering a new generation of  creatives into the industry.

People have a skewed idea of what working in this industry is like. Some think it's a never-ending barrel of laughs, like the blooper reels from films and TV series we see so often on social media. Some think it's a hard, hostile, dog-eat-dog environment, and others think it's all champagne, red carpet events and glamour. The truth is of course, a lot more complex.

I personally have gone full circle, more or less. When I was at school I wanted to be an actress and so at eighteen I left for London and the glamour that supposedly waited there. I never imagined that all these years later I'd be working on the other side of the camera, and that in 2025 I'd be busier than ever.

New book release.

Well I promised you big things this year, and I like to keep my word.

Girl Displaced is a book I thought I might never actually finish. I started it several years ago and I think I only got as far as the first few paragraphs before I had to put it aside to write a film for a client. When I managed to get back to it I completed the first few pages before I had to put it aside again.

It was years before I returned, just last year. I was determined to sit down and write it. So I cleared my schedule for a few weeks and wrote hard and fast. The result is the book you see today.

Girl Displaced marries two worlds I know so well - Birmingham and the Ayrshire coast - and tells a tale of a girl who no longer rightfully belongs in either. I hope you enjoy it. x

New year, old me...

Well 2025 has started with a roar and I'm working as hard as I ever do. But more news on that later.

Here's the first new book for this year. I hope you enjoy it. You can find it on Amazon here
